We in the Wednesday Studio are very sad this week. Our friend and fellow artist, Linda Norton, died after a short illness on Tuesday morning, January 26.
Linda had been part of the Wednesday Studio for more than 20 years–long before we started calling our weekly class the Wednesday Studio. She told delightful stories, organized visits to the country home she and Randy built in the hills of Virginia, and chimed in on the group’s discussions on everything from the Washington Nationals to Downton Abbey and national politics.
Both at home and when she traveled, Linda kept a sketchbook. In a post she wrote about it in this blog, she said, “I can sketch while I wait for my food in a café, sit on a park bench, or wait for a train. I strive to record what captures my eye or strikes my fancy. . . . There is so much to be gained from simply observing a scene or a thing. When I have recorded something on paper, I have actually taken the time to LOOK at it . . . to soak it in. After the trip, my sketch will take me back to that moment much more than any photograph could. Passersby often stop to watch, or to chat. It’s a wonderful way to meet people.”
These are some pages from her sketchbooks:
Linda worked in both pastels and watercolor. These are just a few of her wonderful works of art:
We miss her.
Thank you Marian. This is a lovely tribute.

Long before it was the Wednesday Studio, I sat next to Linda every Wednesday in Gina Clapp’s watercolor class for at least ten years. Our class even traveled to Denmark and kept watercolor sketchbooks. Linda was such a talent and inspiration to all of us. She was such a delight for all of us. I was also her pastor at Christ Church +Washington Parish, one of the founders of CHAW. While I’ve been gone from the Hill since 2008, I will miss Linda so much, and all of those in our class that we love but see no longer (esp. M’el Abrecht and Susie Foster). May God’s angels go with you as you join with God and that great palette in the sky. Much love, Judith Davis
