March Draw-a-Bird Day garners birds from around the world

This month we don’t have a theme for DAB-Day, so artists chose whatever avian species caught their fancy.

Susan Burdick: Chickadee-dee-dee. Watercolor. [State bird of Maine and Massachusetts.]
Anne Shields: Black-Billed Magpie. Pastel. [Anne passed on these tidbits about magpies from Birds&Blooms magazine: Their standard call is “mag-mag-mag,” but they can also mimic other birds and human voices. These birds have very high intellect and are clever problem solvers. Montana bird scientist Eric Rasmussen said that a black-billed magpie broke into his chicken coop and carefully removed full eggs in its beak. Eric said that the theft didn’t annoy him—it just made him appreciate the magpies all that much more!]
Lynne Mallonee Schlimm: Western Meadowlark. Watercolor. [State bird of Kansas, Lynne’s home state, and Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Oregon.]
Tom Eichenberger: Orchard Oriole. Acrylic.
Martha Larkin: Ribbon-tailed Astrapia. Acrylic and face-paint crayon.
Tara Hamilton: Turquoise-Browed Motmot. Watercolor.
Mara P., age 6: Parrot. Colored pencil.
Jim Eichenberger: Oyster Catcher with Chick. Pencil and digital paint.
Christina Lara: Tundra Swan. Colored pencil.
Jana Snyder: American Robin. Brush pen, colored pencil, and oil pastel. [State bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin.]
Carolyn Rondthaler: Scarlet-Rumped Tanager. Watercolor. Credit to Kathy Doremus of backyardbirdnerd.com for the subject photograph.
Marilyn Tindel: Can Spring Be Far Behind? Watercolor.
Marian Wiseman: Baltimore Oriole. Watercolor. [State bird of Maryland.]

Another wonderful collection. And always a thrill to see one of my photos turned into a lovely painting. 💕
