We in the Wednesday Studio are very proud of our fellow artist Wan Lee for taking first place in the show of the prestigious Potomac Vally Watercolorists for his painting The Gathering. Here is Wan’s prize-winning painting:
Wan Lee: The Gathering. Watercolor.
The show, titled “Inspired by Nature,” was judged by Jack Rasmussen, director of the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center in Washington.
In judging the 146 entries in the PVW show, Rasmussen said, “The technical mastery in this exhibition is staggering.” He stated that in choosing winning entries he looks for technical mastery, emotional as well as intellectual content, and surprises. He added that engendering emotional response in the view is rarer to find than the other elements because the medium of watercolor is “so unforgiving.” (Amen to that!)
Rasmussen stated that all of these elements are present in the “truly amazing watercolors of Wan Lee.” We are all so happy that the judge has realized what the rest of us have known forever.
The exhibit is on display in Alexandria through June 24, 2018, at Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Road.

All of Wan’s watercolors are wonderful, but “The Gathering” is truly extraordinary. I feel privileged to have watched him working on it. Congratulations, Wan.
Marian, thank you for the very nice write-up and for keeping our blog up-to-date.
