Be sure to read the captions for the birds this month.
Anne Shields: Piping Plover. Pastel. Anne reports that the plovers lay their eggs on the beach, so during nesting season the Cape Cod beaches are closed. Jim Eichenberger: Blue-Footed Booby. Watercolor, termpera, and ink. This booby caught Jim’s attention on the cover of Westways, the AAA autoclub magazine of southern California. The magazine ran a feature about California’s Channel Islands, also called the “California Galapagos.”Carolyn Rondthaler: Blue-Billed Curassow Chick. Watercolor. Carolyn chose this chick because it is one of two hatched in August at the National Zoo. The Blue-billed curassow is a critically endangered bird. Tom Eichenberger: Far Eastern Curlew. Acrylic, pencils, and markers. This shorebird breeds in northern Asia–places like Siberia and Mongolia–but most of the birds winter in Australia. A few go to other places, such as Korea, Thailand, and the Philipines.Marian Wiseman: Northern Mockingbird II. Watercolor. (State bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.) Yes, I painted this same bird last month, but I wasn’t happy with the painting so tried again. Funny how the “northern” mockingbird is the state bird of only southern states.
