The ABCs of Birds: October 2023 DAB-Day

This month’s Draw-a-Bird Day theme is the ABCs of birds. If artists chose to do so, they could submit a bird starting with A, B, or C, either in its name or a descriptor. Kay’s bird was the first one submitted, so I’ll start with her brown thrasher.

Kay Elsasser: Brown Thrasher. Colored pencil. [State bird of Georgia.]
Vince Iannachhione: Alebardo (Big Bird’s Cousin). Colored pencil and art markers. [Vince gets extra credit for having an A, a B, and a C in his title.]
Carolyn Rondthaler: Chickadee Snacking on Sunflower. Watercolor. [State bird of Maine and Massachusetts.]
Jim Eichenberger: European Bee Eaters. Pencil, ink, watercolor, and tempera. Jim writes (courtesy of Wikipedia) : “As their name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat flying insects, especially bees and wasps, which are caught on the wing from an open perch. The insect’s stinger is removed by repeatedly hitting and rubbing the insect on a hard surface. (I want to see that! ) During this process, pressure is applied to the insect’s body, thereby discharging most of the venom.”
Anne Shields: Blue Tit. Pastel.
Tara Hamilton: Black Rosy Finch. Watercolor.
Tom Eichenberger: Bluethroat. Acrylic.
Susan Eichenberger Hazlewood: Caspian Tern. Colored pencil.
Maddie Armstrong, age 10: Caspian Tern. Watercolor and colored pencil.
Vera Armstrong, age 12: Peacock. Colored pencil.
Donna Breslin: Baltimore Oriole. Pastel and pastel pencil on sanded grey paper. [State bird of Maryland.]
Susan Burdick: Albatross. Pencil. Susan writes: “Sometimes as artist just needs to keep things simple, like ABCs. For this hectic month and the fun brief — all I could think of was Monty Python’s “albatross” sketch. (If you aren’t familiar, here’s a link: Monty Python Albatross.) I chose to execute my submission in the continuous-line method, in keeping with the seeming stream-of-silly-consciousness nature of Monty Python humor. (Also it was quick and super fun!) Thanks for letting me play!
Marian Wiseman: Brown Pelican (State bird of Louisiana). Watercolor.

What fun! I really enjoyed seeing how everyone interpreted the “assignment.”

Marian — Did someone already suggest a theme of “flocks” of birds? With their proper names. I found out that it is a Siege of Cranes. Also an Opera of Canaries. Or a Flamboyance of Flamingoes. Google has all of this stuff and the names are wonderful. Anne >
