THE WEDNESDAY STUDIO

Wednesday Studio artists try yet another art medium

Anne Shields has a beautiful set of plates her mother painted, and Anne decided to paint a set for herself. That’s just about the whole story. When Anne decides to do something, look out.

The plates Anne has from her mother are dinner plates, mostly fruit. Her mom painted a few other pieces, too, but I have seen the dinner plates and can understand why Anne treasures them.

One of the plates painted by Anne’s mother.

Anne found a pottery painting studio in DC that provides the materials and fires the pottery. Here is the set of lunch plates she made, followed by close-ups of four of her plates:

Anne commented that the hardest part was knowing exactly what the color would be after it was fired in the kiln, because the paint darkens in the firing process.

A number of us from the Wednesday Studio hope to try painting on pottery this fall, but Tara Hamilton and Martha Pope already jumped on it. Here are their pottery items.

Tara said she chose to paint birds from Columbia after seeing a 60 Minutes segment about endangered and unique birds there. About the entire process, Tara commented, “It was great fun.”

Martha Pope: Hors d’œuvres plate with poppy.

The pottery painting studio, at 3413 Connecticut Avenue, is All Fired Up. Here’s a plus: the pottery is dishwasher safe!
