Ellen Cornett has new show at Rockville gallery

Story Fragments is the title of Ellen’s show at Artists and Makers Studios 2, opening this Friday, October 6.

Working in carbon pencil, Ellen has created what she calls “surreal tableaux” that refer to fairy tales, poems, and rhymes.

For example, this drawing, titled Race Day, takes us right to the starting line in the Tortoise and the Hare fable. At least  I think these critters are at the starting line. What are those birds doing with the tortoise? Are they hectoring the rabbit? Where does Ellen come up with this stuff?

Here’s another one. Titled The Quick Brown Dog, Ellen swapped the animals in our old typing exercise that uses every word of the alphabet: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” A couple comments: (1) that is the prettiest beagle I’ve every seen; (2) that little fox is definitely not lazy. She is the cutest fox I have ever seen. And the mellowest. And, it goes without saying, foxy.

Here is one more of Ellen’s works that are in the show, Wolf Turned Shepherd. Ok, I’ve just got to throw this out there, not that Ellen needs any suggestions. How about some sort of surreal tableau with a sheep guarding Little Red Riding Hood, while the fox guards the sheep flock, and Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother guards the chicken coop. Too much?

We can join Ellen at the opening reception, from 6:00 to 9:00 this Friday, at 12276 Wilkens Avenue in Rockville. The show runs through October 26. Viewing hours are 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Saturdays and  Tuesday-Friday.

PS. This just in. Ellen reports that the birds on the back of the tortoise are the tortoise’s lawyers, negotiating terms. My comment stands: Where does she get this stuff?
